All tablet computers available for checkout have 16GB of storage and are equipped with WiFi capabilities. They are available for a 7 day loan period. How can I check out a tablet?
To check out a tablet you must be at least 18 years old, have a current library card in good standing, show a valid photo ID, and sign an iPad and Kindle Fire Loan Agreement. “Current” library card means you have had a library card for a minimum of 30 days. “In good standing” means the library card and any guarantee library cards have no items more than 28 days overdue and contact information (address, phone, email) is up to date.
How long can I keep it?
iPads and Kindle Fires check out for 7 days (1 week) at a time.
Can I renew it?
Yes. An iPad or Kindle Fire may be renewed ONLY if it is not on hold. Two renewals are allowed.
Can I place a hold?
Yes. You can place a hold on an iPad or Kindle just as you would any other library materials.
Can I return a tablet in a book drop?
NO. If you return an iPad or Kindle Fire in a book drop, you may lose tablet checkout privileges.
Where do I return a tablet?
iPads and Kindle Fires must be returned to a library staff member at the Circulation or Information Desk inside the Moab Library at least 30 minutes before closing. You must wait while the library staff checks all components. If you drop off a tablet and do not wait while library staff checks the components, you may lose tablet checkout privileges.
What comes with the tablet when I check it out?
All components include:
(1) iPad or Kindle Fire
(2) Otter Box case and cover
(3) charging cord
(6) screen wipe
(7) info card
(8) carrying case
What if the tablet is lost, damaged, or stolen while I have it checked out?
Before checking out an iPad or Kindle, you will be asked to fill out an iPad and Kindle Fire Loan Agreement. In signing that document, you accept full financial responsibility for the iPad or Kindle Fire and agree to pay all costs associated with damage to or loss/theft of the tablet and/or tablet accessories while checked out to you. At the time of this writing, the replacement costs are $655 for an iPad and all its accessories, and $490 for a Kindle Fire and all its accessories.
Can I download ebooks, games, etc.?
Yes. You may sign into the iPads and Kindle Fires with personal Apple or Amazon IDs and sync or download content. ALL data (including any Apple or Amazon IDs used while the device was checked out) will be wiped from tablets upon return. The library is very concerned about your privacy. Upon return, Kindle Fires are “reset to factory defaults” and iPads will “erase all content and settings.” iPads have some preloaded apps and may be used without associating an Apple ID to the device. Kindle Fires must be signed into an Amazon ID to access tablet functionality.
Why do I have to sign into a Kindle Fire to use it when the iPad does not require a sign in?
The library uses an Apple program to preload some apps on the iPads after they have had all content and settings erased from the previous user. The preloaded apps are associated with the library’s Apple ID. Patrons will NOT be given the password to the library’s Apple ID. If you wish to download more content, you may use your own Apple ID. Amazon does not currently offer a program that the library can use for preloading apps on Kindle Fires.
Can I download free apps without providing a credit card number to Apple or Amazon?
Yes. The information card included in a tablet checkout has directions on how to download free apps without providing a credit card number.
