Fatal Drowning

Date: 9/13/2017

Subject: Drowning

Location: Colorado River Milepost 7 SR 128 area known as Nude Beach

Time of incident: 10:36 a.m.

Time of recovery: 11:54 a.m.

Drowning victim: James Laverne Gregoire, 70 year old Moab resident

On this date at the above location Mr. Gregoire was with family members on an outing on the Colorado River. A young family member wearing flotation devices went too far out from the shore and Mr. Gregoire swam out to bring him back to shore. Mr. Gregoire yelled that he was having cramps and went under water and did not surface. The child made it back to shore safely.

Responding units including members of a dive team with the Moab Fire Department initiated a search of the river for Mr. Gregoire. Mr. Gregoire was located at 11:54 by a member of the dive team. Mr. Gregoire was found at a depth of ten feet and approximately thirty feet from shore and in the location where he went under water.
