[ARCHIVED] Deceased Mountain Biker 6/23/2014

NATURE OF INCIDENT: Search and Recovery

DATE: 6/23/2014 DAY OF WEEK: Monday

LOCATION OF OCCURANCE: Amasa Back Bike Trail and Jackson Bike Trail

NAME: AGE HOMETOWN & STATE
Dirk De Muynck 46 Waarschoot, Belgium

On Monday(23rd) the Grand County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a family member of the above party. He had contacted that party at approximately 9:00 a.m. and stated he was on the Amasa Back Bike Trail and expected to be done with the ride in a relatively short time. Our office was contacted at 6:00 p.m. when Mr. Muynck had not made contact with that family member. A search was initiated at that time in the Amasa Back area and the trail systems in that area. At approximately 12:30 a.m.(24th) the above party was located on the Jackson Trail about 11A miles downriver from the Kane Creek Trail parking area. Mr. Muynck was deceased when located. It appears that he had started to back track on that trail and was carrying his mountain bike at the time that he went down. Mr. Muynck was carrying a backback with camel back that had water and additional water bottle in the pack and food in the pack. Search and Rescue and Sheriff’s deputies were able to transport the decedent to the trailhead on a litter and wheel and had to ferry the decedent and equipment and personnel across Kane Creek with the use of inflatable kayaks. Mr. Muynck has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City. The cause of death is undetermined at this time.
